  15. In dvipsk-5.58c, MakeTeXPK is called with the default (compile-time)
  16. value of MFMODE.  Since MakeTeXPK already tries to guess the mode
  17. corresponding to a given resolution, using MFMODE may not be a good
  18. idea.  Also, since each mode has its own dpi, using the same (default)
  19. mode for different resolutions does not really make sense.

  21. In my case the default printer is 300dpi, mode "cx".  When I sometimes
  22. request 600dpi with the -D 600, dvipsk calls MakeTeXPK with the same
  23. (default) mode, "cx".  If no mode had been specified, MakeTeXPK would
  24. have guessed right, "ljfour".  But now, I have to use the "-mode"
  25. option to dvips to force the "ljfour" mode.  Incidentally, the "-mode"
  26. option is *not* documented in the man page though it is there in the
  27. texinfo file.

  29. Since the setup at this machine is used by a large number of users, it
  30. is not possible to setup a config.printer for every printer.
  31.  
  32. I think a better idea would be to use the default mode (MFMODE) for
  33. the default dpi, let MakeTeXPK choose the mode for other dpi's, and
  34. use -mode to force MakeTeXPK to use a non-standard mode if desired.

  36. That way, users can avoid having to use a -mode option every time they
  37. use a -D option.
